Dear Home 2009/07/27

I thought I promised myself that I wouldn't send many individual Emails. They take up too much time! But there's not much to report this time anyway.

First, I would like to say a special thank you to Leila, Brooklynn, Isaac, Jon, and everyone else in the Perkins Ward 5&6 year old primary class for the toughtful card they sent me. ^^ It really made my day. =)

Second, a bit of bad news. It seems that Elder Taylor's grandmother, to whom he was very close, is struggling with her health. Please keep their family in your prayers.

Lastly, some excitement. The summer fair is about to begin, and they decided to set up their circus tents (and horse races and whatever else they'll have) in our backyard. Too noisy for our liking? Probably will be, but there might be some nice pictures in the future. ^^

I think that's about it. If there are any questions I've forgoten to answer please remind me next week.

Your happy and productive missionary, Elder Andrew Robarts.

Ask an Elder 2009/07/27

Questions:
Have you found a golf ball yet?

Which of you is taller? You or Elder Taylor?

What gospel principle seems to most "hook" investigators? I wouldguess that eternal families is big.

Have you used your left-handed scissors lately?

Answers:
I have found a golf ball, but there are golf balls in every apartment, so I'm not worried. It's not even cold yet! =P Though your knuckles do start to hurt after a while...

I haven't really noticed who's taller, but if I had to guess, I'd say I am.

You know, sadly, I haven't seen any one gospel principal 'hook' somebody. Mostly we just invite people to read the Book of Mormon and pray about it, then explain that their good feelings mean the book is true. Though most people admit that it'd be important to find out whether or not there's a prophet on the earth right now.

I use my lefty scissors all the time! ^^ Our daily planners have tabs that we can cut out, allowing us to instantly flip to th current day, so I cut out the tabs with my lefty. ^^

Thanks for asking me questions.

2009.07.23

Ask an Elder - Questions:
What do you like best about your companion?
Is your bed lumpy? Is your cereal?
What do you have for breakfast?
What did you do at Kevin's baptism?

Dear Home,

I am extremely short on time this week, but luckily, Monday will be a P-Day, too, so I'll write home then as well.

I really like how sincerely friendly my companion is. He's going to great lengths to make sure that he's a good companion and I really appreciate that. The only trouble with that is that I lack the skill and insight to be able to return the favor. As soon as I see something I could do for him, it's usually too late to do it. =/

My bed is fine. As for the cereal, I actually have a funny story about that. Last week, it was my turn to pick what kind of cereal we got. I took quite a while to do so, and eventually decided on Nesquik (it was on sale). E Taylor and I left the cereal aisle; E Taylor seeming slightly irritated. Afterwards, I asked him what was wrong with the cereal I picked. He said that the only reason he was annoyed was that I took so long to decide. That may be one of my major flaws; indecision. I try to make things perfect, and thus I hesitate, and ponder, and worry, while time passes heedless to my endeavor. Yes, it's good to want to do my best, but it's better to do something imperfectly than to wait until I can do it perfectly and end up waiting forever.

(( Which reminds me of your CD, Sariah. I'm glad you decided to make it; I really love listening to it! ^^ ))

At Kevin's baptism, all I did was witness it and give a closing prayer. Not much, but at least I was there to see it. ^^

I'm out of time, but luckily, I didn't have a lot to report anyway.

2009.07.15 Dear Home

Dear Home,

BIG NEWS!!! I hope you haven't sent me any CDs yet because with the coming of President Paulson, there have been some BIG changes, especially concerning music.

Firstly, EFY is NO LONGER ALLOWED. Don't send me any EFY! Motab is still fine. In fact, I'm starting to really love it, but EFY is now off-limits, so if you've sent me any, I'll have to send it back. =(

Explaination: I just realized that many of you may not know what I'm talking about. A while ago, Mom asked me what I want in my packages. I said music. EFY is great. That week, President Paulson changed to rules, so recieving EFY CDs would no longer be great. =/

Another big change to the music rule is that even though EFY is excommunicated (first word that came to my head when I wrote it), anything else is up to our own disgression. If we want to listen to a burned CD that was sent to us by a pianist whose work is completely unknown to the world, that's our descission to make, and nobody else's. Of course, we still have to follow the guidelines in the White Handbook (basically, don't listen to anything that would distract you from being a missionary. Don't listen to anything that wouldn't be acceptable in sacrament meeting), but it's not strictly 'you can only listen to this' anymore.

Another massive change is concerning future P-Days. Starting on Monday the 27th of July, P-Days will be held on Mondays rather than Wednesdays. Why? They think it'll help us be more productive in the middle of the week. Or maybe they just like messing with our schedule. This will probably mean that transfers won't happen on Tuesdays anymore, but I don't have all the information in that area. More info will come as I recieve it. Oh, and P-Day will be on Thursday next week, because Zone Conference will be on Wednesday. Again with the schedule changing. =S

Well, that's about all the updates I have right now, but I do have a question: What would YOU like to see in my Emails home? I'm just trying to keep you happy, so I'm open to suggestions. Talk to you next week!

I love you all! -hugs everyone- -hugs Mom again-

Be happy. Be good.

Guilt and Shame

In an earlier private note, Elder Robarts shared an insight that his trainer, Elder Kirkland shared with him. I thought it was so profound and helpful that I requested his permission to share it with his faithful readers.

Elder Kirkland also shared with me his insight about Guilt and Shame. Guilt is when you feel bad because you did something wrong, like commiting sin. Shame is when you feel bad for /being/ something wrong, like a sinner, a human, someone who makes mistakes. God gives us Guilt so we'll feel bad enough to repent and try to do better. Satan gives us Shame so we'll get discouraged and give up. But because of Elder Kirkland, I've learned that, like Adam and Eve, I don't have to feel ashamed for being human/naked. Satan may tell me I'm naked, but if there was a problem with that, God wouldn't have made me this way. But what God DID make me is a way for me to not be ashamed. Satan gave Adam and Eve a covering of fig leaves, which will dry up and break. God gave A&E coats of skins, which would cover their nakedness much longer. But something had to die to give up their skins for Adam and Eve. I hope you all see the analogy there.

Isn't it a shame that, no matter how hard you try, it seems like you
ALWAYS foget something important? Last week, P-Day was on Thursday,
which meant that many of my loyal readers checked my blog on Wednesday
morning and saw nothing. They checked in the afternoon, and saw
nothing. They checked late in the evening, and still saw nothing. The
next day, an Email came, but no explaination was given as to why my
Email was a day late.

The explaination is this: Happy Canada Day. Since many of the stores
and libraries were closed last week, President Paulson, who arived
durring the exchange I told you about, decided that P-day would serve
us better if we had it on Thursday, rather than the nation's holiday.

In other news, I would like to thank all of those who have written me
letters. I will try to write replies today, but given the busy-ness of
P-Days, I probably won't be able to answer them all.

Also, it may interest some of you to know that my blister healed
completely the day after I told you about it. Did you pray for that?
If so, my testimony of prayers has grown considerably.

Brother Porter was sucessfully baptised and confirmed last weekend, so
we took pictures, and today we're printing them, as well as some other
pictures I've been meaning to send you. I probably didn't order enough
pictures from the one-hour printing place, but I still have the
digital copy, so I'll send you what I've ordered, and we'll see if
more come later.

Almost out of time. Is there anything else? -checks my notes- RIGHT!

I started to write a letter home last week, but hoping to give you
more than just an 'I'm still fine. I still love my mission.' etc., I
decided to write you some insights from my daily studies, but being as
picky as I am about my writing (I'm still taking time to corect the
typos I notice, which I should, and have stopped doing), I only got
the introductory page down in writing before the PDay period was over.
But don't worry. A letter/talk will come (eventually).

In closing, I love you all, I hope I didn't forget anything, and I'm
looking forward to hearing from many of you next week. -hugs everyone-
-hugs Mom again-

Ask an Elder July 8, 2009

The Questions:
1) Did Kevin get baptized ? Do tell.
2) Are you getting any mail from the ward? (Jerry Cook who does thebulletin asked) Who all writes to you? ( I ask)
3) Do the folks there talk differently than the folks back home?

The answers:
Yes, Kevin did get baptized. ^^

From the ward? No, I don't. At least, not outside my family.

Sariah sends me a weekly Email, I get lots of letters from you (Which are greatly appreciated. ^^ -hugs-), I got a wonderful letter from Ben last week, and also a letter from Kelsey a while back. I was also surpised to get a letter from Dad, and also a letter from Sister Ruf, one of the teachers in the MTC.

Do people talk differently? Yes, but it's hard to make mention of all the little differences. Mostly it's pronunciation, and not just 'sorry' or 'about'. Any time there's a 'orr', like in 'tomorrow', it sounds different. Also 'again' here rhymes with 'complain'. 'Been' rhymes with 'bean'. And other vowel sounds are different, too. Bag sounds like Bayg. The second a in Garage sounds like Bag. There may be more, but there's probably too many little differences like that to mention.

In response to your previous question, what would I like in my letters and packages, treats are always good in packages, particularly chocolate covered things like almonds or pretzels. Another thing I'd really apreciate is music. EFY is surprisingly good, and Motab's Showtime CD, where they perform broadway hits (hopefully including that Lord of the Rings song) would also be really nice. (Maybe we should make a wishlist, but I don't want to sound like I'm asking for things. You know that feeling, right? It's kind of like... I don't want anyone to get the impression that I'm covetting what I don't have, or that I expect other people to just give me whatever I want. I don't want to be greedy, I guess.)

I almost forgot. The things I want in letters varies from person to person. From Mom, I'd like to know about any changes that are going on at home. The idea is that I don't want to come home, see something I didn't expect, and say 'What? When did that happen?' That goes for others as well, since there are going to be more changes than Mom alone can write.

Also, (and I hope this doesn't sound prideful or anything) I'd like you to write to me about any occurance, object, or circumstance that reminds you of me. Let me know that you remember me, especially if the experiance, whatever it is, makes you happy. =)

Ask an Elder 07/02/09

Questions:
1) What would you / do you like in care packages? or not particularlylike? in letters, too, for that matter
2) When do you anticpate your next transfer?
3) Do you get many dinner appointments? Have you eaten anything new/different?

Answers:
Question 1:
I'll have to give that some thought. Derek (formerly known as Elder Adams) had his family bring up some Almond Joys, and he left some on our porch, but Elder Taylor and I have eaten most of them by now. I've heard from a former American that Bounty bars are similar to Almond Joys, but I haven't tried them yet. Maybe that could be Ginger Owings gift to me. =) Tell her I said thanks. ^^ Other than that, I'll have to think about what I'd like in letters and packages. I'll get back to you on that.

Question 2:
I'm not sure what the date will be, but it's Six Weeks after the Tuesday before I sent you my first Email from P.A. I don't have a regular calendar so it's not as easy to check exactly what the date will be. I know it'll be in early August, but that's not really specific enough, is it? =P

Question 3:
Yes, the members feed us, but the most interesting new food I've eaten was made by Elder Taylor, including chicken sandwiches with eggs and BBQ sauce in them. They're really good, but unfortunately, we're out of eggs. =/ We'll buy some today. ^^

Thanks for your questions! ^^
Love, your happy missionary, Elder Andrew Robarts. =)

July 2, 2009

Dear Home,

I've got some exciting news this week! ^^

First, The Zone Leaders (Who have keys to all the missionary apartments in Saskatoon) came up for an exchange a few days ago, and they brought our mail with them, including the mail that was sent to the St. Charles apartment. A few pieces of mail might have slipped through the cracks, but I'm VERY grateful for what I've got.

The good thing about getting letters is that they're so nice to receive! But the bad thing about getting lots of mail is that it takes time to read it all, so I'm a bit behind right now.

Another big piece of news has to do with one of our investigators. His name is Kevin, and his scheduled baptismal date is July 4th. Now, for those of you that don't know exactly when that will be, that means that Kevin is getting baptised THIS SATURDAY!!!! Elder Taylor and I are extreemely excited and OF COURSE, I'll take pictures. Whether or not I'll actually be able to print them and mail them home in a timely manner is another question. =/

Speaking of pictures, in the white missionary handbook, meaning the missionary handbook that is WHITE, it clearly states that we are NOT to take pictures while we are proselyting, which is almost 100% of the time we're awake. Do you know what that means? That means that with the recent rain we've had, followed by some wonderful sunshine, coupled with the beautiful, huge sky we have here, plus the lack of tall buildings, there was the most AMAZING, MAJESTIC, COMEPLETE, CLEAR, COLORFULL RAINBOW that has EVER been created the other day, stretching from one horizon to the other, arching over a big, pretty tree, and I WASN"T ALLOWED TO TAKE A PICTURE OF IT!!!! D= D= D= If that handbook wasn't written by Prophets of God, I would question why that rule was ever made. It was very upsetting. =(

But there are some perks that come from being a missionary. While Kevin was taking his baptismal interview with one of the Zone Leaders (passed with flying colors), I was able to sit in the chapel of the Prince Albert meetinghouse and ponder my calling and God's promises to me (and everyone else on the face of the Earth). That was a pretty spiritual experience. Plus, I've been feeling the Holy Ghost talking to me a LOT more than he used to. I get these subtle impressions to say things all the time. I know it's been helping in the missionary work now that I'm overcoming my timidness enough to say what he wants me to say. He has really been a great blessing to me. ^^

I got my first blister this week! =P Elder Taylor and I have been jogging in the mornings, so the sweat, plus the friction from jogging has resulted in a small blister. Luckily, it doesn't hurt at all. ...Okay, a little, but only when I'm jogging, and even then, it doesn't hurt every day.

Times up! =(

Address Correction

I noticed that the postal code on the return address on the envelope is different from the address I had posted in the side bar until just moments ago.

The postal code is S6V 6T3 (not S6K 6Y3). I sure hope he has been getting his mail!!!

Elder Andrew Robarts
4-957 7th Street E
Prince Albert, SK, S6V 6T3
CANADA

Sorry about that everyone! The original was a little hard to read.

a bit less than a penny a word

No email (yet? 6pm) today, but an undated snail mail postmarked 090625.

Dear Home,
So here's how things seem to work in P.A. : Less time for email, more time for letter writing. Which is just fine with me because I haven't mailed a letter in three weeks. = ( Sorry about that.

Unfortunately, having written my 'weekly' letter to the Mission President (there's some room for improvement there.), getting my hair cut, and cleaning the bathroom (all of which took longer than expected), I now have very little time to write anything. Much less anything of value. Still, I promised I'd send you SOMETHING, so I'll have to send you this. I'll try to do better next time. = (
